So this summer it looks like I'm going to be backpacking across Europe for about a month, from mid to late May into most of June.

I don't have much of a plan so far, but right now it looks like I would fly into Helsinki and Lodur would pick me up from the airport.

Places I'd like to visit: Helsinki, Stockholm, Tallinn, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Venice, Florence, Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, London, Barcelona and Lisbon.

I'm open to suggestions of other places to visit. There is a heavy emphasis on Germany and Italy because I lived in Germany 10 years ago, speak some German, and I am of Italian descent.

I do not plan on renting a car. I think I could make it around using public transport like trains, U-Bahns, busses etc.

I haven't figured out a budget yet, but I think my parents will help me out with plane tickets and I have about $2000 saved up in the bank.

Any tips, tricks, or suggestions on helping me saving money, places I need to see, how to get around most efficiently or anything else you can think of would be greatly appreciated!

Me and my Brother are going to do something like that aswell We'll hold us to france, spain and italy though since we've lived in both germany and sweden.

are you sure that 2000$ is enough? i mean.. it may be if you're camping (but even that is expensive at some places), but if you're looking for hostels/hotels it is going to be very expensive.. and traveling with train and bus will cost you pretty much too.

Two friends of mine were backpacking through sweden last summer and they did that via hitchhiking. They said that it was cheap and interesting since you meet new people all the time.
I think it's forbidden in sweden though, but it might work for you in other countrys ^^

also: try to take a friend or brother/sister come with you, because it's much funnier and also easier to travel in new countrys when you're with someone else.

Good choice! May I also recommend Portugal? It was epic when I was there, although I was very young at the time, maybe 9 years old.

I have a a bit more saved up than that but I was hoping not to spend all of it, plus I have a job for the next few months too before the trip, so I'll make a little more. My Aunt and Uncle went to Italy in September and said there's some kind of cheap pass that applies to most EU transit. I'm gonna have to call her soon to figure out what that is.
I planned on staying with Lodur and I have friends in Germany, Belgium and Portugal but other than that I planned on finding cheap hostels and hotels. I might look into www.couchsurfers.org before I go though to see if there's anywhere I can stay for free or much cheaper.

My brother is too young to be able to handle the traveling/drinking I want to do unfortunately, and I haven't found a friend yet that can commit to going, so it looks like I'm going to do it by myself. But I think I'll be fine on my own, honestly. I lived in Germany from 2-12 years old and we traveled a lot so I think that gives me an advantage over the normal American backpacker.

I really did want to include Dublin but it's kind of out of the way, not sure if it's going to be feasible. I really want to try an authentic Guinness though, and Ireland does have a ton of cool old shit.

Could you possibly ask your sister about that? If that's what they did, it's probably the best option.

About 300 miles North... but Newcastle's waaaaay nicer. I don't doubt you'll fit in some great cities on the trip. Madrid and Lisbon are amazing if you fancy heading down that way too.

About 90 minutes by train and bus, but to catch the latest bus here you'd have to leave Amsterdam at about 23:00.

I've been planning on doing something like this myself. Travel trough Europe with train (called Interrailing if I'm not totally mistaken). But it will have to wait until I'm free from my services in the army.

I've heard its pretty popular to do this actually, and the good thing is you actually just pay a one time fee for a train card to travel as much you want during a limited time period.

Okay, we'll see what happens. I might crash at your place the night before and then head into Amsterdam or just see Amsterdam during the day and then take the train to your place, not sure yet.

I'm not sure how much do you have time, but my hometown, Lappeenranta, is very beautiful at summer. They actually have called it as the most beautiful summercity in Finland. I bet Lodur quite agrees this.

I'm already imagining you, me and Lodur drinking some beer at 25 Celsius warm on a ship at the Lappeenranta Harbor, while very beautiful Saimaa lake is surrounding us.

And it's only 2 hour train trip from Helsinki.

Where in the US are you going? Hopefully I'll be flying over to Finland at the end of May, so it'll be close.

Anyway, I did make some progress actually. I got in touch with a family friend who lives in Markelo, Netherlands so I will probably stop there for a couple days. She gave me some advice on where to go and knows someone who is also in journalism who lives in Amsterdam, so I might have a place to stay while visiting there.

I'll try to do both, thanks for the advice. I actually just got off the phone with my Mom and she told me I can fly over somewhere around the 19th-21st of May, we're going to look at plane tickets this week. Apparently they're cheaper on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays.

Good news everyone!

Everything is not finalized yet but it seems that I will be arriving in Helsinki around 13:00 on Monday, May 21st. My mother and brother (he's 19, turns 20 in June) are going to meet me in Amsterdam the following Monday and from there we're going to travel to Markelo, Holland to visit friends and then travel to Frankfurt to visit more friends till around Sunday, June 3rd. From there, my brother and I will have the opportunity to travel around until Sunday, June 10th, when we will be meeting my mother in Frankfurt to fly back to the U.S.

Many details still need to be figured out but at least now I have some dates to work with.

Last summer I had my little 3 week adventure through Europe.

Took a flight from Helsinki to Copenhagen, where I started the three week journey by train. Copenhagen - Frankfurt - Paris - Lyon - Figueres (Only for few hours) - Barcelona - Milano - Basel - Berlin - Brussels - Amsterdam - London from there by plane back to Helsinki. So if you just can get the Rail pass I strongly recommend it. Using trains you will save a big buck couse its practicly free (0-15€) . Night train will be more expensive (30-50€) but on the other hand no need for hostel. Also if you wanna find cheap hotels ---> www.hotels.com wake up happy! Our 2 person rooms were about 20-30€ each.

May 27th: Arrive in Amsterdam
May 28th: My mother and younger brother arrive in Amsterdam

June 2nd: My mother flies to Spain
Now from June 2nd to June 7th, my brother and I will be on our own. (My brother will turn 20 in June and can handle himself just fine so I'm not worried about taking him anywhere)
But I'm not really sure what we should do during these days. Suggestions? I was thinking London, Paris, or Munich
June 7th: Arrive in Frankfurt, visit old friends
June 10th: Fly out of Frankfurt
