Playing with Tablet
« on: June 29, 2010, 06:01:58 pm »
Hey everyone!

I was thinking about sharing one thing with people who might be interested.
Sadly, I was never introduced to tablet tool before, I discovered how nice thing it is just around 3 weeks ago or so. I gotta say, it's a very powerful tool, which makes the mouse look quite pathetic when it comes to digital drawing. To be honest, I was never able to draw the line which I imagined with mouse at my first try. It was just so uncomfortable and hard to control...

Not that I'm using the tablet in a very pofessional way, but I'm pretty satisfied with the results so far. Currently I use simple brushes, without any fancy effects. It's enough to have Black and White brush, play with the flow and opactiy (either it's PhotoShop or any other software, like PhotoPaint, PaintShop etc etc.) and use the pen pressure. The outcome might be quite amazing. When I started at first, I never expected the drawing to turn out so well.

At first, I took a look at the image I wanted to be the base for my worm. Obviously it was Raziel:

Then I drew a simple worm like shape on a separated layer, without any details and certainly with a lot of mistakes. Great thing about digital painting, is, that it's not a paper, so you can use ereaser to your heart's content. All the wrong lines you make can stay, you will either remove them or cover up later on.

[SPOILER]

When the general shape was more or less satisfying, I started to play with the colors. I used the original image as base (it was inside my document, as one layer which I was hiding or showing, depending on my needs), I picked up some colors from it and tried to adjust the head shape and shading. I love when I have one element done well, so i can built up the whole structure on something already. Im usually starting with the hardest part, to see how it will look, and how well I can have it done. For me it was the head, eyes, and mouth covered with the cape.

[SPOILER]

Of course I might fix it later, when I see some mistakes, but so far it looks fine. From this poing Im heading with my bruses down, using dark brown, light brown, black and white brushes at low opacity. It looks like that later on:

[SPOILER]

From this point I decided to start drawing the hand. I noticed it was too small on my drawing, so I ereased it, drew a new one, quite much larger. I wasn't able to copy the original hand so well, I didn't have so much time to even try it, but I was quite happy when I've done this:

[SPOILER]

Now the Soul Reaver, amazing bluueeeee sword. I so loved it in the game, but drawing it was quite much pain. At first I used light blue color on my brush and drew the general shape, later on I used dark blue color to play witht he lights a bit, then used white brush to give it a nicer look. After a general shape was done, I used all kind of blue, white and black brushes to make it look more realistic.

[SPOILER]

But, here I noticed, that I have to check how it will look on the black background (it's easy if you kept your drawings on separated layers, so switching backgrounds is a piece of cake). Then I realized plenty of details missing in the sword, hands and face. I tried to fix it all and drew a skeleton like worm spinal/body coming down from the cape.

[SPOILER]

It looked quite nice already, I felt excited... but at the same time, it was really scary to paint the wings. Raziel has this kind of damaged wings without any bones, they were broken, so they moved freely on the wind, as if it was a normal cape. I had to add the lights drom sword to the wings, also to the face and other details, to make it look a bit more realistic.

[SPOILER]

In the end, there was only the ground left, and maybe some minor fixes to the image. Drawing ground wasn't hard really, but it required quite some patience. it didn't turn out THAT well, but Im happy with the outcome. Everything was painted with the basic brushes. Playing with the opacity, flow, and the brush size is the basic thing I think, and it's something that you can practise quite much if you will try to draw something like this. I thin it's great to have a real picture in front of you, or on separated layer, to see how the lights, shadows and colors should go. I was unable to copy evrything eprfectly well, but it wasn't my point here. I just needed a worm based on the Raziel characer from Soul Reaver. I think it's resembling him well.

[SPOILER]

If you happen to own a tablet, I encourage you to play with it as much as you can, it can bring you a lot of fun and allows you to create plenty of new things!

EDIT:
Bah, spoilers don't work well.. I thought I could hide the images between spoiler tags.

It seems to take a lot of creativity (you must know what you gonna do). I suck at plain drawing though, I am probably the worst in drawing in my class. But it is cool to see the progress of a picture. I currently have no photoshop, can't try out though. :/

Thats amazing, always wanted to try it out, drawing with mouse is so limited, with hard work you usually even wont come near the hoped results

Now the table turned, and d0t learns from me, or simple asks for some thigns to be done for him. But yeah, it all started when d0t made this animated banner with Raziel.

Hey Raz, do you have an online portfolio/showcase of any kind? I love your art, it has inspired me a lot in the past. Now, once again, great work :D

Hehe, thanks guys for kind words. It's always nice to read positive comments, I guess this is reason why people show to public their works. Feeding the confidence a bit.

Yes, it's fun to do something new. Doing same things over and over is so boring and exhausting, you can dry out if you keep going like that. Just like your diet should consist of different food each day, same is with your own doings. Im aiming to buy new hardware and start to play with 3D and movie editions, maybe I can learn some from Bart. He kinda rocks in AfterEffects.

Funny, when I did the drawing I used my old CRT screen. Meanwhile visited one friend and checked on his LCD how it looks, and it's so different. Now looking at it again on yet another screen, and gotta say - whatever you do, make sure to check how it looks after you adjust the contrast and brightness to the max. Many little mistakes and flaws can be exposed like that.

About portfolio - I'm not prepared for that yet. I feel like all I've been doing so far is way too amateur and childish. I bought domain and web space 2 years ago, and I still can't get to do my own Online Corner. In my head I got like 1238901884 ideas, each was kinda awesome, but at same point - it would requite enormous amount of time and skills I have not obtained yet. So Im postponing and postponing... once it will be done, I will share it with you guys for sure. I will certainly write a bit about the begining of my experience, which is related to this game and people in our community.

Thanks again!
