Samurai Champloo - one of the best anime series ever created. Unique plot, amazing sense of humour, filled up with great fighting scenes. Oh, and it's not about silly teenage kid who got super powers when he woke up after a wet dream.

Plot

A young lady named Fuu is working as a waitress in a tea house when she is harassed by a band of ruffians. Another customer, Mugen, offers to take care of them in exchange for food, but ends up instigating a brawl. Jin, a stoic young ronin in samurai garb, enters the tea house in the midst of the fight. Mugen attacks Jin after he proves to be a worthy opponent and they begin fighting one another, ignoring a fire that started during the brawl. They both faint from smoke inhalation. When they awaken, they find they have been arrested for the murder of Shibui Tomonoshina, the magistrate's son who had burned to death in the fire, and are to be executed. With help from Fuu, they escape and Fuu asks them to travel with her to find "the samurai who smells of sunflowers," a mysterious man Fuu can give little description of, but whom she insists she must find. They agree to join her, with Fuu making only one condition: they are not to duel one another until the journey is done.

Cowboy Bebop - another anime of the same director. Again the plot is quite original, even if there are a few side episodes, you can't really call them "fillers", because they still build up the right atmosphere. Great characters, wonderful action, astonishing ending.

Plot

In 2022, the explosion of an experimental warp gateway caused major damage to the Moon, bathed the Earth with radiation, and left an asteroid ring that threatens the surface with daily meteorite bombardments. As a result, many survivors abandoned the barely-habitable Earth to colonize the inner planets, the asteroid belt and the moons of Jupiter.

The show opens in 2071, when the entire Solar System has been made accessible via reliable warp gates. Mars has become the new central hub of human civilization, and interplanetary crime syndicates exert influence over the government and the Inter-Solar System Police (ISSP), limiting their effectiveness in dealing with crime. As a result, a bounty system similar to that in the Old West is established to deal with fugitives, terrorists, and other criminals.

The crew of the spaceship Bebop are a partnership of bounty hunters, known as "cowboys", who travel the Solar System trying to apprehend bounties. Jet Black is the owner of the Bebop, but has partnered with Spike Spiegel for his diverse combat skills. During its travels, the Bebop gains new crew members, much to the visible annoyance of both Jet and Spike.

Most episodes revolve around attempts to bring in a specific bounty. Some of the Bebop's varied targets include small time thugs, gangsters, hackers (known as "net divers" in slang), religious leaders, psychopaths, genetic experiments, mutant creatures, and petty thieves. Though the characters advertise themselves as self-interested, their actions frequently show that they are sympathetic to the plight of others. On several occasions, the crew forgoes the chance to collect bounty rewards upon learning of the circumstances of their bounty-heads.

Occasionally the Bebop crew members' pasts catch up with them, and the show regularly turns to the history of the main characters in flashbacks. Spike's past as a syndicate enforcer is a major element of the series, while other episodes deal with Jet's previous occupation as an ISSP officer on Ganymede, Faye's mysterious past and significant debt problems, and Ed's childhood. The day-to-day life of the crew is also explored during the series. A major recurring theme is the chronic lack of money, a situation that is not helped by the crew's frequent inability to collect on bounties. This results in the general disrepair of the Bebop and common shortages of food.

Ghost in the Shell - Another anime, which is a must for every anime lover who is a bit older and always felt jizz in his pants while seeing or reading a S-F story. It's hard to describe in short what it is about, since the plots are quite deep in each of the series, same goes for the movies. Just if any of the above two animes got into your liking, make sure to follow this one too.

The manga series has been adapted into two anime films, Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence; two anime television series, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG; a film based on the television series' continuity, Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. Solid State Society(...)

Some good movies:
Spirited Away
My Neighbour Totoro
Howl's Moving Castle
Nausicaa (of the Valley of the Wind)
Porco Rosso
Laputa (and the Castle in the Sky) and
Princess Mononoke, which is imo the best movie by Ghibli and Miyazaki.
Also Grave of the Fireflies
I Can Hear The Sea/The Ocean Waves
Ghost in the Shell
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
The Sky Crawlers
Sword of the Stranger
Dead Leaves (bit strange maybe)
Paprika
Mind Game (also "bit" different)
Perfect Blue
Jin-Roh
Akira
Memories
Millenium Actress
5 Centimeters Per Second
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Vampirehunter D: Bloodlust
The Wings of Honneamise

All are good even if you don't watch or haven't watched anime. Don't need to know anything about anime in general. They are not your stereotypical big eyes anime. Give at least some (Akira, Jin-Roh, Mononoke) a try if you have time.

Some good series:
Shigurui
Great Teacher Onizuka
Golden Boy
Gankutsuou
Kara no Kyoukai (aka Garden of Sinners)
Kaiba (very different from mainstream series)
Legend of Galactic Heroes (old and long but good)
Now and Then, Here and There
Ping Pong Club
Texhnolyze
Welcome to the NHK
Kino no Tabi (aka Kino's Journey)
Cromartie High School
Detroit Metal City
Baccano!
Mushi-shi
Karas
Mononoke
Monster
Planetes
Rurouni Kensin (aka Samurai X, both the tv and OVA)
Darker Than Black
Black Lagoon
Hellsing (both the tv and OVA)
Serial Experiments Lain
Eden of the East
Gungrave

And of course Neon Genesis Evangelion, which is probably the most known anime of all time along with Cowboy Bebop.

http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=main is a pretty good site for checking out about series.

Yea, I remembered that after I was done with the post. They sure would have been worth to be on that list. Well, that list is pretty poor anyways, since I was pretty tired when I was making it.

Cool. What is Black Cat about? Mind to tell us and spare us the job to look up for ourselves?

Yea, Black cat is cool too. Here you can see the plot and some images of it:

Also, do you guys like more dubbed or subbed anime? Imo subbed is far better, I really dislike those english voiceactors.

Edit, Oh and theres some weird, but pretty funny anime, imo :p

Dubbed anime is so faily. Though, I think that Bleach's English dub is acceptable, but is not as great as the Japanese.

The English dub of Gurren Lagann makes it look like shit. :(

yes RussG, music-wise all the mentioned series have the best quality music background.

Rap (it's not really a hip hop I believe) is actually something that blends suprisingly well with the Samurai Champloo drawing style and characters.

Blues and Jazz are the main themes for Cowboy Bebop, some of the songs became my best songs I ever heard. Ghost in the Shell has also wonderful music background. There is this famous musician working for anime series, Yoko Kanno, she composed music for both, GITS and Cowboy Bebop. She is a really talented woman. If you pay attention to the music as well, you can download OST from the series one day and check them yourself.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I see, many people are addicted to the Naruto series. I must say I like to watch it too, same goes for One Piece (which I like even more than Naruto) and Bleach, but it's like this never ending story with pure action. The dialogues are usually silly, the fillers can annoy hell out of you... yet, you still keep watching it. Sometimes it amazes me, why the hell I still bother.

I've seen pretty much most of the animes available, which aren't meant for girls only. Love and romance anime make me throw up, so I turn them off right away. I kinda hate when the anime is in this standard enviroment, school, students bla bla bla. Teenage kid saving the world, sigh.
That is why I like a lot the series which aren't like that. Besides the ones mentioned above, I also loved Hellsing, which was mentioned by some people already. It's really great one, esepecially if somebody who always liked the stories with vampirellas.

Eden of the East, quite a new anime - also mentioned by Flaw, it had the most wonderful opening song and visualisation I've ever seen. The storyline is short but also worth to check it out.

I could comment on almost each anime mentined here, but not so many are really worth it. However!

@ Flaw - And of course Neon Genesis Evangelion, which is probably the most known anime (...)

Why was it so good in your opinion? Why is it so well known? I can't understand it. Besides some psychological issues, which aren't really that amazing, there was nothing that exciting in this anime. It left me out with the bad aftertaste when I finished the series. "That's it?" - I was thinking. "No way, people said it's so so soooo good. Where all this goodness hid?" - I was whining. So maybe you, or anyone else, could give me a hint, what I missed? Because I can't understand this particular fenomenum at all. Why people call it "The best anime of all time".

I'm not good with explanations, but if you are really interested you can watch here:
http://www.animefreak.tv/watch/black-cat-episode-1-english-dubbed-online-free

If you read the manga the stories are a bit different in how the events take place.

WARNING: Creed Diskenth is very creep and sounds kinda homo, but at the end of the series he becomes kinda cool (kinda)

Rap (it's not really a hip hop I believe) is actually something that blends suprisingly well with the Samurai Champloo drawing style and characters.

Rap (or more correct definition; mc'ing) is one element of hiphop culture. Mc'ing (also rap) is considered as poetry over hiphop beats. If you want an example of a hiphop beat, take this for instance:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfFXeFF4wfo

Nowadays what you can hear in the radio is mostly NOT hiphop at all. It has no soul or essence whatsoever. It's just rapping about silly shit over silly beats, just to get the money out of ignorant peoples purses. KRS-1 said once: MC can be a rapper, but a rapper can NEVER be an MC.

One of the men behind Samurai Champloo's soundtrack was Nujabes, who died in Februari in a car crash. Here's a sample of his musical art: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2O0kuoiAm2A[/offtopic]

Ah, I have not seen or heard about good anime movies, so I would be really glad if you people could post some good movies like Flaw already did.

And btw, If you people happen to watch bleach, naruto or one piece, I would be really happy to hear when ever there will be a new movie one of them. Like, there will be a new movie from One Piece pretty soon as subbed.
