OpenLieroX file too big
« on: May 12, 2010, 06:26:27 am »
I tried downloading OLX on one of my other laptop today and it was going to take me more than 2 hours to download it.
It took 5 mins to download teeworld.

I think the 150mb file size is really a big problem.   :(I suggest my friends to OLX but they won't download it because its too big while Teeworld and Soldat are only 5 and 15 mbs. <-they played them

Can anyone create a minimalist version?

Like one without all the overpowered mods, and all the skins.
^I really want my friends to play OLX and i want to have OLX on my other laptop.

I bet if you guys delete all the mods (except the liero ones and mortar ones), skins(except worm ones), and level editor  then i bet it can cut the file down to less than 30mb.  :)

You could also probably remove the LevelMaker folder and the dedicated scripts which would also cut it down, you could do this all on your own then compress it or put it in a .rar then email it to your friends. Just take out anything besides IMPORTANT scripts (some scripts you don't need I.E. dedicated). You could take out gusanos maps since those aren't used often. There definantly a way to minimize the file size on your own then send it via email.
Or I could do it for you then send it to you via email, then you can send to your friends :)

Actually I have a better idea, I'll edit it then post it in the filebase as OpenLieroX Minimal beta 1 (it will be a beta then when I get feed back if there is any problems that don't pertain to problems with the actually olx, im talking about game not running properly or errors, I will fix then post it is OpenlLieroX Minimal 1) The first one will be made using 0.59 beta 9, since that is the only version I have at the moment.

No Problem, I enjoy doing these things (surrounding myself with projects). I already downsized it a bit but there was an error so I'm trying to get Albert to help me out with this.

easiest...

1st download LX with only custom maps and with only classic mod... (skins included since they dont take much space, and new player likes to select skin anyway, my map folder is around 80mb... thats 1/2 of lx download size.. and mods should b around 50-70mb)

2nd download would be "extras" that includes most of the maps and mods

and since new olx can download mod and maps in game, theyre not needed in the lx download imo...

wut?

You can't because there is a size limit in FileBase. Even totally stripped version is too big for that limit. There is a reason for that. LXA server is for hosting these forums and smaller files like skin, levels, mods...

Upload it to some free host and if it's good enough and developers agree, we might put it to Sourceforge.net.

Unless by a miracle my mom unlocks megaupload/rapidshare then I will have to send the completed file to Albert or someone to upload to one or both of the sites.

I think the minimal version should be totally stripped of all levels but default one - Dirt and most of the skins but lets say Quality skins and most of the mods but Classic one. There should also be a note about the version and where to get more files. There are Minimal level, mod packs so people can download that separately. But 150 MB is not too big anyway, nobody is using crappy net from 10 years ago, and if they do, well their loss and fault. So if you really want to do a MINIMAL VERSION, remove everything but a default level, mod and decent skins. It is pointless to make half minimal version and half of the half minimal version and so on.

Yeah I just deleted every skin besides default, and I was going to leave mods: Modern Warfare and Liero v1.0. I was going to leave all the maps but like BakTer said if you need levels you can download in game, same goes for mods. I'm having a slight problem though, earlier I said I had an error, right? Well I wen back put all of the files back in then I only removed some levels, mods, and skins. I'm still getting the error. Error: Whenever I try to start a game the whole thing crashes, then it brings me back telling me that it crashed. Anyone know why this is happening?

OpenLieroX.pdb is needed so that the automatic crash reporter works.

Automatic level download should work in most cases. Only requirement is that it is uploaded in Filebase. So all those level can savely be removed -- when you join a server (even when the game has started already), it should work. However, it might be a bit buggy sometimes. (Multiple bugs where already reported).

Automatic mod download doesn't work yet. While in lobby, manuel download (by clicking on the download button next to the mod) might work. Probably even more buggier though than the level download.

These both features where planned as mandatory for such a minimal version.

Probably you removed something what cannot be removed. However, the game should never crash. Do you still have the openlierox.pdb in that directory so that the automatic crash reporter works and sends us the information about this crash? Otherwise I cannot really tell. I also need the log file of course.

You cannot really remove anything except maps, mods, skins and themes. (Well you spoke about the dedicated script and other stuff but they are maybe 1kb or so, also it would not be possible to use the ded server in that case anymore.)

---

We planned such a minimal version a few times. But there was never very high (or any) request for it yet and so we considered it as not that important.

I didn't delete anything besides MW, Liero v1.0, all maps besides dirt map, and all skins besides default skin. That should answer both your question about what I deleted. (to albert) I will send you the log for today and yesterday, as these are the days I tried to work on the file.

So what? NinjaTaro is one of the most used skins in game and you removed it. Levels like LFR, JB, FF etc. are most played levels and you removed them. Understand what I mean?

I recommend you strip the following:

All other mods except:
-Liero v1.0
-MSF II
-MW 1.0
-Food Fight 0.6
-WH40K 0.13

All other maps except:
-Fossil Facility
-Castle Strike
-Liero Factory (revisited)
-Castle Wars
-Blat Arena
-Complex
-Dirt Level
-Ore Quarry
-Wormmountain
-Jail Break
-Jukke Dome
-Lamda

All other skins except the top100 or something like that.

Opinions are like assholes: everyone has one, and they usually stink.

But you can just dl maps and mods in game so what's the point?

I just took out all mods except Liero v1.0 and MW v1.0, all maps besides dirt level, all skins besides default (skins aren't needed so why add in skins besides default when it isn't needed? Im trying to strip as much as I can. without f'ing up the game.)

Because I don't expect every single new player to know where to download and I don't expect them to have the brains to do so either. My list would only have a few mods and some more maps. Skins don't take much size so might aswell leave a hundred.

those .dll files and that error report files are what take so much space. It doesn't matter if there are one or two or 5 maps when there is a 50mb error report file.

Yea exactly. :) That is why we didn't tried that much yet.

Most of the DLLs are also obsolete depending on your Windows version. You can try to delete some of them. Though even if it works for you then, it might not work for other people. That is why we just included all of them - so it works for everyone.

Btw., I already made it about 50MB smaller than it was earlier by converting all sound files from wav to ogg.

Their should be a link on start up while OLX loads.
Like on top of the loading bar it should say:

Minimalistic Version 0.1
To download skins, levels, and Mods go to [link]
