[Release] OpenLieroX beta 8
« on: October 10, 2008, 12:33:02 am »
This version is outdated. Please look here: http://www.openlierox.net/forum/index.php/topic,12643.0.html

OpenLieroX 0.57 beta8

This version comes a bit later than originally expected. Beta 8 is mainly a bugfix release, it fixes many bugs that were discovered in beta 6 and 7.

What's new:
- Chatbox has HTML and copy&paste support
- connect during game support (only for clients >= beta 8 )
- fixed max upload bandwidth limit
  - IMPORTANT NOTE: because of this fix, the settings in Options -> System -> Network Speed is now handled correctly, which might cause trouble for those who upgrade from previous versions. If you have a good connection (ADSL or better, with at least 256 kbps upload), set this to LAN else the game will be laggy
Another note: This is known to be buggy in 0.57 beta8. If you have network issues, try a newer version where this is hopefully fixed.
- removed the built-in media player as it was buggy and caused crashes
- Menu_MessageBox can handle long messages correctly
- better synchronisation for shooting, that should also fix the self-shooting problem
- reconnects from a client are handled better
- fixed problems with starting the game on some computers (invalid configuration error)
- general fixes of new features (since Beta6)

And these are the changes from Beta5 to Beta7:
- Game-speed multiplicator
- Options editable from everywhere in the game
- Force random weapon selection (with the extensions to have the same weapon for all players)
- Automatic weapon selection if only one weapon is available
- Notify application window on events when application is in background
- Auto-completion for chat commands
- Command button for host in game
- Show player online/chatting/away status
- Client info dialog for host
- fixed crashing in DBZ mod
- improved connecting to servers behind firewall/NAT
- reduced the loading time of IP to Country database a bit
- added support for G15 keyboards
- improved downloading, added mod downloading
- fixed a security bug in the authorise command
- added video post processors that change the final appearance of the screen
- updated joystick control
- recovered compatibility with Windows 98/ME
- faster projectile simulation
- fixed spawning in rock in random maps
- fixed duplicate joining
- fixed weird game behavior when kicking bot
- fixed crashes in the viewport manager dialog
- added map anti-aliasing
- fixed crashes in the News tab
- improved crash reporting tool
- fixed bots not shooting with beam weapons
- fixes in physics (wallshooting, self-shooting, flying at the top of the level)
- server displays only one message on multiple suicides
- optionally attach a console win

the obvious thing is that the game speed is all whacked, its significantly slower and feels like weird gravity even though the game speed is set to 1, so to increase the game speed to the familiar normal speed you have to disallow all previous versions even if you are not using the other new options that do so. does it do this on other peoples computers or did this just get released without running it once?

As far as I remember, no single change to the physics was made since Beta5 (except game speed of course, but it was only a small addition and with game-speed=1, the code behaves exactly the same as earlier).

I also don't have that feeling you described when playing Beta8 with normal settings.

You can make an easy test: Start a Beta8 or Beta5 server and connect with the other version (Beta5 or Beta8). Then shoot on the server or the client. On both the server and the client, the projectile should behave exactly the same if it is the same speed (because once the shoot-projectile is spawned, each client does the simulation of it on its own). I just tried exactly that and I cannot notice any difference.

Is it perhaps a psychological reason? If you play once with gamespeed 1.5 or with 2, after that gamespeed 1 feels really slow... (at least for me).

Works nicely! I wonder what tags are allowed in the chatbox. I tried <b> and <h1> and they worked. Anything else?
<br> and <hr> worked, too.

K, so if anyone experiences the game kinda dropping connection to the host after a couple of minutes in lobby/ingame - please post back (Your client is then pretty much useless  :'().
I got this problem, but we decided to release anyway, since the others could not reproduce it.
Get yourselves to IRC asap, I'm lonely. (And please change nick from OpenLieroXor)

It was not my idea to do that. :)

The whole sense I see in connect during game is in games with unlimited lives. And in such games, you can play immediatly. Try it out.

Yes, if anybody else has this problem, please report!

We are still not sure about the reason of this problem. It could be several things. The most probable reason we see right now is that sometimes your router/firewall configuration ****s some of the UDP packages and the current network channel implementation isn't able to handle that correctly. Pelya is right now working on a new CChannel implementation with a CRC check which should therefore filter out all bad packages. I hope this will solve the problem for you. As we didn't want to wait another week with the release (perhaps the time the implementation of the new CChannel will take) because my time is running out (I'll probably be busy doing stuff for my university in the next 3 month or so), we dediced to release now. We can see then how much other people have this problem and how important a new Beta9 release is (with new CChannel and other fixed bugs which occur in Beta8). If it is only you, you can use the SVN version later. If it is not only you, then it is probably another bug somewhere in network. But as said, I cannot reproduce the problem you described and it makes it therefore very hard for me to debug/fix that (if it is a bug and not only a network problem). If you have some free time, it would be nice if you could try to debug that yourself.

Albert, you don't need to doublepost if you find a new post after 17 min, edit instead. And people will see you edit anyway.
Overall a nice beta, havent played much for a long time but it worked the 15 mins i played ::)
If anybody finds grammatical errors and misspellings in my posts please pm me.

the physics works the same, it just feels different because of the speed. the speed seems to work the same as whichever is the server, so the test by connecting 5 to 8 or back and looking for the same behavior on both screens doesnt get at what i am getting at. instead, try running a beta <=7, then running beta 8, and noticing the speed difference. the speed difference in beta 8 is significant when i run it, i need to go to 1.1 or 1.2 to feel like betas <=7. you can count how long it takes when you jump to land, that is a basic way of seeing how the speed difference is. (maybe on modern warfare gravity this is not noticeable cause you're already halfway to zero g but with liero gravity it is definitely noticeable, the difference between moonwalking and jumping on earth. other people who joined the server noticed it too.

Connecting with Beta8 to a Beta5 server is the *same* as running just a Beta8 local game with gamespeed=1.
