Hm, for some (but I think not all), I have restricted the cache. For the others where I don't have done that: The default value is quiet high. So high that it will probably automatically fill as much as there is system memory (not one single OLX instance, but 5 of them together).

But that shouldn't be a problem. OLX will also automatically free the memory if it sees the system runs out of memory. I wonder why your video recorder didn't worked.

Well it will free RAM only if there's no RAM for OLX itself, it won't free it for other programs.

There is swap on the machine, isn't it? But in any case, OLX should ensure that there is always a bit physical memory left. And if not, it will free something. In any case, every tool should be runable. Or does your recorder depends on free physical memory?

Video recording from "screen" is usually very intensive, both on memory and cpu, and I doubt swap is fast enough for anything that's going to run in realtime to work on.

There's no swap (see "top" output) because it's server setup run inside some kind of virtual box. Don't remember how much memory video recorder allocates or OLX which is started along with video recorder, but it will eat considerable chunk of memory at once and fail to start if there's no memory left.

If you can run more then one server on there, then I would suggest running two servers(or three if you can do Gusanos.) for different settings. 100lt is so vast that running one server to switch between different settings is probably a good idea. (I would also stick rifles under 100lt, because multimod is less popular demand for newbies).

I'm not sure about this, but I'm sure most people who play the game on the forum don't use the LXA server, so I would suggest another instance of it with just mortars for newbies. Newbies love mortars because they are easy to learn, so I suppose running that by itself might be one of the better ideas anyway.

I suggest using levels and mods that are not as popular in the servers as well. There are a lot of good levels that people don't use because they prefer to play LFR and Fossil over them. A good list of unplayed levels is;

Code: [Select]
Base of Nowhere
Twilight Castle(or anything by Legend Pretty much).
Snus Industry
Fossil Facility 2.0 (or whatever that level is called).
Worm Mountian
Lamda Razvisited
Liero Factory(Maintenance)

This will teach the players who are newer to the game to enjoy more levels then just castle strike and LFR.

Mods you might wanna cycle through are
Quote
16-Bit Warfare
Metroid Mod
and a couple more Ic an't think of right now.

Keep inmind that not everyone got those levels or mods. Personally i think it would be a better idia to stick with the defauld pack. But there are lots of levels and moods that can be used from there aswell.
The idia your up with seem like a pretty good idia =)

But they probably have newer OLX version and they can download the stuff they need.

I like the idea of having a server for 100LT/Rifles and Morts.

The tricky thing is how to solve the voting - I personally don't like much democracy in these things because there will always be people who will come to a 100LT server and type !preset Mortars. Restricting the vote to only few selected settings seems to be a good idea (for example only 100LT, Rifles and MSF II) to me but I am not sure if the current voting system allows that.

Why not quit the vote system?
Just make the setting change every match. like
100lt --> Rifle --> Mort --> 100lt --> etc.

Or on two servers 100lt -> Rifle -> 100lt -> Rifle and Morts -> Morts -> Morts. The thing is that there are also some other less-but-still-somewhat-favorite settings like MSF II which should be available if the players agree on it. But, as I said, an oldschool (mainly 100lt/Rifles) server becoming a mort server through voting is not really wanted.

I would not mix Morts and other settings like Rifle or 100lt. Maybe Rifle and 100lt is ok together but I would keep Morts as a seperate server. Well but just try out.

Does veto work the same way vote does? I don't think people should be able to change on a vote, but instead using something along the lines of, the game selects a map and game setting randomly, and the players are given the time to type !veto.

If the number of !vetos is greater then the player base then the server chooses another setting randomly. That way you cannot change it to anything.

I'm not 100% sure what I'm stepping into here, because I don't know python, I know ruby and I heard that Ruby comes from python, so I'm thinking that if everything is done from the python files, it should be easy to create a script that will;

- Randomize settings, pick a random level and mod.
- Send message to players to type "!veto".
- Check the number of players who type "!veto".
- Check if the number of !veto's is greater then the player base in the server.
- Change the setting and start without letting people veto anything.

Can be implemented, the current system is indeed clumsy. I'll try to fix it when I'll have more time on my hands.
For now just start more servers - that host should be able to run 3 more servers additionally to my server with video, and 5 without.
I've disabled video recording - noone watches that youtube link anyway.

Alright seriously, I don't remember having this much trouble finding anything before.

Can someone hook me up with a message to my pms with how to set up the dedicated server, DC told me before my pc crashed, but I can't remember anything now.

Everything important about the dedicated server itself should be written here:
http://www.openlierox.net/wiki/index.php/Dedicated_server

If something is unclear/missing, please add it. If you have questions, just ask here.

About the host specific things:

The binary of OLX 0.59 is called openlierox-0.59 right now (located in /usr/bin/games I think but that should not matter). I will soon update this once I made the next 0.58 release.

I use the screen tool to run it in background and control it. Do you know that one? Very short: "screen" just starts a new screen session which will keep running when you close your terminal. "screen -x" connects to an existing screen session.

If you want to start multiple dedicated servers, I would recommend you to use a seperate user (or chroot) for each one. That makes everything a lot cleaner and easier.

Maybe I'm talking out of my ass, but I'm trying to find the LXA server over SSH.

I just needed to know which file I actually needed to run, but more importantly, I needed to know how to run multipul instances of the server because I don't know how. :o

Well, I guess you don't know screen.

Type this:
Code: [Select]
screen
Then, type this:
Code: [Select]
openlierox-0.59 -dedicated
Then, you can close this terminal and it will keep running in the background. And your first dedicated server is up.

If you want to start other instances under the same username with different configs, this becomes a bit more complicated. Try the solution which is stated on the Wiki page.
