Teeworlds-like controls?
« on: July 28, 2008, 03:14:32 am »
Hi all!

Yesterday I played OpenLieroX for the first time and was disappointed with controls. I want to ask if developers have plans to support Teeworlds-like controls. Also I would like to hear opinions pro and con both styles. Thanks! :)

You should explain what Teeworlds is and maybe give some helpful links.  :)

It looks kinda cool.

Edit: If you're talking about mouse-aim, that is into OLX already.
Edit: Wrong, mouse-aim (like in Teeworld) is not in OLX. There is joystick-alike mouse-control, which is more or less a keyboard-wrapper.

In Teeworlds you aim with mouse and you move with keyboard. Tee aims always at the mouse pointer. This way there is no need for 'strafe', you simply aim at the one direction while moving to the other direction. Also rope is activated while you press and hold the button and deactivated when you release it.

I saw this, but in Teeworlds mouse works a bit different. :)

I just tried out teeworlds. I'd rather not lierox be like teeworlds at all. :P

Teeworld becomes very popular in recent days. As far as I know, it got far more popular than OLX and has a really huge community already. And it's indeed a funny and fast nice 2D action shooter. If somebody compares Liero with 2D Quake, I would say, Teeworld is much more close to a 2D Quake (you even have a rocket launcher there and you can do rocket jumps). Though, that makes Liero not bad, it's just a different gameplay.

From time to time, the discussion came up to add this type of gameplay/control (where you aim directly with mouse) to OLX/Liero. This will never happen, or to say it in another way: If it happens, it's a different game and not Liero anymore. Of course, somebody could fork OLX and create it's own game with similar gameplay to Teeworld (or also Soldat). But we are not planning so.

Mouse support was added to OLX since Beta4 if I remember correctly. This mouse control is not comparable to the mouse aiming in Quake/Teeworld/Soldat/everyothergame. The mouse control in OLX is intended as a replacement for a keyboard or a joystick, therefore it has a similar gameplay like with keyboard (moving mouse up for example is more or less the same as if you would press the Up-key on keyboard).

Btw., Teeworld is not new to us, we already have taken some looks into the code and we thought of implementing the network engine in a similar way like them (though I have doubts on that because you have much less projectiles in Teeworld and it would not work good with Liero-many projectiles). Also their graphics engine is interesting. From a developers point of view, there are of course a lot of similarities between both games.

Though, as I said, that are both different gamestyles and you should not mix it up. :) And to get fun with Liero, I know, most people have some problems with the gameplay first because it's different from most other games. But after a while, you get used to it and you will see, it's a lot of fun. And the gameplay just belongs to Liero. :)

Thanks for explanation! But I doubt that I have enough temptation to learn such controls atm. ;)

I've tried to implement Teeworlds-like mouseaim before, that's what happened - 5 screens of flame from the community. OLX tries to mimic one small ancient game called Liero, but with net support, and bigger part of community expects from it being that old game. And even the ones who never played Liero are used to the Liero way of playing, and will never allow us to change it.
In my opinion you should play OLX only if you are Liero fan, and ready to endure all it's bugs and weird controls just because it's Liero, otherwise you should play Teeworlds - it beats OLX  all the way around.
Edit: Yup, getting up in the morning and going to work at Monday makes me depressive :( .

Teeworlds sucks on my laptop, as do all games that require some form of mouse control, unlike olx :)

Are you kidding me? After reading this thread I downloaded teeworlds. I tried it... It froze TWICE before I could actually get into a game. I joined this server, it seemed it was a capture the flag and everyone was these weird fat kirby dudes. The gun we got was this awkward laser that shoots like a second after you press fire so it was hard to actually do anything. The rope was this big metal chain and it SUCKED. I couldn't get anywhere with it because it had such a short distance. I understand that it was probably specific to the mod, but this server had more people in it than any other, so it seems some people actually liked playing like that.

Actually I have been playing it and it is quite fun. The Laser is, in a way, the mortar of Teeworlds.

Good morning.

Hello, I just came back form gamestop after picking up a copy of Call of Duty 4. I tried installing it several times... It FROZE when I put a Film into my sole optical DRIVE!! to have something to do while installing. After I got it working I joined a server located on the moon and everyone where these wierd HUMANS!! fully armed for combat, are they trying to start a war or something???!!! It was SHIT and I jumped back and forth not able to shoot my incredibly rusty and lame M4!! ANDANDAND I couldn't move my ass properly as I had these LEGGSS!! instead of a ROPE!! Even The projectiles moved faster than I could!! I even DIED like after taking like THREE shots to my torso!!!! I understand that it was another game, but the lunarserver had so many people on it, including the President of the United STATES!!!!!!, So it seems that Bush&co actually liked playing these kind of games!

"A rant for a rant"

Oh, don't take it too seriously, it's meant to be hysterical... I don't mean to offend anyone.

Hehe, common guys, we are going OT. :) The question if Teeworlds is fun or not is not directly related here and as everybody sees, flavors are different. :)

(Btw., I think it is normal that the rope in Teeworld is very short. It just another gameplay.)
